If you really want to know how insecure TELNET is, then TELNET to your computer from another computer, and use Ethereal to capture the session. You'll be able to see the username and password in clear text, one character per packet (along with an echo character/packet). If you want an even starker display of something being insecure, do the same thing, but FTP to your computer and then examine the packets. The FTP trace will show the username and password, each in a single packet--you don't even have to go through the trouble of looking at successive packets. Regards, Richard Huelbig .
