I have experiencved major problems with Gnome2 (as you are using Fedora Core2, I doubt that you are using Gnome), it seems to like to change privilige bits on the audio devices, so I suggest you take a look in your /dev and see if the user in question is allowed to read/write to the audio device. //Aho .
