I've experieneced same problems... If you are using Gnome2,
in gnome-font-properties dialog, go to Details and set Smoothing to None
and Hinting to Full. This gives me satisfactory results.

If you use Gnome2 and have mozilla-xft installed then font settings can 
be tweaked from control ceter both for desktop and mozilla.
