Open up a terminal, and run the command:
XFree86 -version

(Although the name of the command might be different, depending on your 
setup). Running Mandrake 10.0, my XFree server gives the following output:

XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1
Release Date: 15 August 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.3-3mdkenterprise i686 [ELF]
Build Date: 24 March 2004

Even if you're working with 4.2.x, I wouldn't be worried. But if you've 
got a much older version, then I'd probably consider an upgrade. From my 
(limited) experience, upgrading the X server is much more difficult than 
upgrading the kernel, so perhaps you'd rather consider a switch to a 
paper-based environment? :-) Also, I believe another poster mentioned 
something about default drivers VS the nvidia drivers. As far as I can 
tell, the only improvement gained by using the nvidia drivers is actual 
video speed... although I don't have the same problem as you, so it 
might fix it.
