Subj : USB Controller failure: To : comp.os.linux,comp.os.linux.help From : DanielSBen Date : Wed Jun 16 2004 08:03 am Just yesterday, I got my old computer (AMD-K6-2, 500 mHz, 184 megs RAM, etc) to dual-boot Windows 98 with Red Hat Linux 8. They both seem to work fine, but a problem... the USB Controller (SiS 7001) isn't working at all in Linux, and will only work in Windows if i switch drivers (Between SiS 7001 and Generic) while working in Windows (and it'll stop working if i re-boot with Windows). This is all the more pressing since the computer uses a USB HID mouse (Microsoft 2.5 button infrared, an intellimouse?). Thus i spent 10 minutes pounding my keyboard in frustration until i figured out how to open the 'Red Hat' menu to open a terminal or to log off. Whenever I boot Linux, when the "USB Controller...." check is performed, i get a bunch of gobbledygook, followed by "insmod usb-ohci failed" and a big red [FAILED] - when all others get green [OK]'s. After the check the mouse's infrared light turns off, and remains off in Linux. If i boot Windows, the light stays on, even as Windows cannot recognize the mouse. When i open up System - properties tab, the USB controller is lit up as malfunctioning. When i switch from SiS 7001 or Generic to the other, the mouse works and continues to work for the rest of the session with Windows. It stops working next boot, however. If it helps any, I'm multibooting with GRUB. And, newbie that i am (at least to Linux), I got the 2 CDs from Linux for Dummies, as the "Red Hat Linux 8 Publisher's Edition." When I first booted Linux after install (bypassing GRUB), the mouse worked fine. When I booted Windows... not so fine. And when I booted Linux again... same thing. As far as I can see, the problem factors into one of the following: 1. Whatever Linux check's doing is screwing with the USB card. 2. Windows and/or Linux reconfigured something to screw both up. 3. GRUB is doing something (but what?). 4. Bill Gates is somehow responsible, with an evil conspiracy with SiS to prevent Microsoft mice from working on computers with Linux. Maybe not. Am I in the ballpark? The USB-controller and the mouse both worked fine with just Windows on the computer. -DanielSBen .
