sorry... maybe that wasn't clear enough...
back of card looks like this
[ O        O (.)  (0)   ]
  a        b  c    d
a is audio out on card
b is audio in on card
c is composite video in
d is cable TV in

i've tried hooking it up with audio out connected to the line in on
the back of my motherboard (on-board sound) played with volume
controls for both my sound and through v4l for about an hour... no
results

also tried speakers hooked directly to audio out... nothing.

am i overlooking something? i've used v4lctl volume 100%, so I should
be getting audio, right?
