We chose SpiderMonkey as a scripting platform. As of a couple years ago, SpiderMonkey became totally indespensible, and we couldn't be happier. We get better products faster to market than any of our competitors, and our customers actually feel comfortable customizing the program to their needs. There's a lot of existing code (see my tutorial at http://www.jsdb.org/embedding.html), including a remote debugger and development tools like JSLINT. Admittedly, it's not as mature as Perl, but at least you can read your own code.
