I've used protoypes in exactly this way to fake up inheritance of properties and methods in a DOM implementation in the way you describe. Works fine so far although (see question about to be posted) there are some small issues. Also.. although the rhino book (Flanagan) is an excellent reference for *using* Javascript it's not terribly helpful for embedding it.
