Are you sue it wasn't "javascript:;" ?  That works the same in all 
browsers, though, so the problem is likely elsewhere.  Without looking, 
I would guess that page is badly written, and assumes IE's non-standard 
DOM, or else it assumes something other than the w3c DOM standard is 
supported by the browser (e.g., Netscape 4.x's old layers extensions).
