Subj : any way to open into a new tab ?

Is there any way for the page to specify that a
link is to be opened into a new tab, if tabbed
browsing is available, like target='_blank',
except new tab instead of page?

I looked at documentation and newsgroup archives,
and it didn't seem to exist.  Seems like this
would be a popular feature, especially for
custom apps.
