You referred to "work by the author".  The only work the author has 
done that can be evaluated by the reader is the existing books, and 
under your scheme paying for them would be stupid.

cooperate to put together a fund that might stimulate the author to 
produce another work for distribution to everyone whether they 
contributed or not.  But if that sort of funding worked in general, 
communism would have worked, and it didn't.]

Yes, value can have many meanings.  However, your multiple question 
marks seemed to imply disagreement rather than a desire to embark on 
another irrelevant tangent.
