Well, he was from such an environment and had matriculated there at a very early age so he was quite a bright young chap and as is often the case at an early age, pretty full of himself. :) (That said, he did do a pretty good job of figuring it out as he went and I ended up working in his lab for a couple of years and getting along w/ him quite nicely.) .
