What a fascinating way to put it. I can see each of the two preening 
themselves and thinking "Ha! See? At least Joe can see my reasoning, even 
if this other fella can't".

Um, not exactly. More a sort of "two can play at that game"? Or "heap coals 
of fire upon their heads"? (You have to look up that second one for it to 
make sense.) Not sure. You could try asking him. :-)
