Wavemaker and Willem,

You both have been a great help!
Although I don't have a working solution yet...and there may well be
none, this exercise has been a valuable one.
All comments have helped me think about what possibilities there are
(or are not, as the case may be).

This has definately turned out to be a much harder exercise than I
first thought it would be.

I've posted a response to Mensanators post asking for an explanation on
his theory. Based on what he has said so far, I think we may be on the
right path...especially the part about using a reference pattern.
