For the love of [pick a deity or similar], look at KDE.

Gnome is dynamic OO strapped onto C, using a crufty model that's very hard 
to understand and change. The Gnome developers, in turn, are widely reported 
to be crabby and cliche-ish. This makes contributing very hard.

(KDE depends on Qt, which is technically payware, but at least it uses a 
pristine and pure C++ object model.)
