Well, your CD drive and your hard drive both use error correcting codes 
to detect and fix read errors.

I can't think offhand of any network protocols that use error correcting 
codes.  TCP, UDP, and IP all use checksums, but if the checksum doesn't 
match, the data is discarded or requested again rather than corrected.
