People with the "knack" for programming are people who understand indirection. The simpler topics are symbols, grammar, algebra (arithmetic, not ring), loop statements, functions, and "objects". That does not imply people who "get" indirection are automatically programmers who enjoy the mind-numbing tedium of explaining reality in terms simple enough for a stupid computer to understand.
