I'm not a parent of students, so I may be missing some specific 
expertise here, but I don't see an obvious issue where you seem to think 
it's obvious.

There's no reason a 55 year old can't work well with people much younger 
or be led by people much younger, and if a 30 year old team leader isn't 
up to leading someone older, then he's really not much of a leader.
