tags to save us from the Windows default of middle > grey While I agree with a lot of your comments in this thread, I have no idea what you're talking about here. I use two varieties of Windows (2000 and XP), running MSIE, Firefox, and Netscape. On no combination of the above OSes and browsers have I ever seen a "Windows default of middle grey" as a background color to any Web page. The default is white (#FFFFFF) or black (#000000) depending on which color scheme you're using. and the 'bgcolor' attribute are largely evil, and should be avoided by any sane HTML developer. All those tags do is interfere with the viewer's ability to choose a readable color scheme (or even Microsoft Windows' tacked-on "high-contrast mode"), print documents legibly, et cetera. Eschew 'bgcolor' the same way you'd avoid background images, the 'blink' tag, and animated GIFs. PDF is best, of course; and after that I'd recommend plain text over HTML, since at least with plain text you can be guaranteed 75 columns per line, 55 lines per page. In HTML you have no guarantees about layout and formatting. -Arthur .
