Actually, I've wondered about that myself. The interviewer just said (after the test), "We don't have a position, but we're going to make one." Maybe they'd already hired as many as they intended to take on at that time, but tested me "for future reference" and then decided they didn't want to let me go? Four years later then offered me a position across country in the main corporate campus, and a guy in the first place I worked there--who became my best friend, lo, these past 20 years--told me they were all excited about this "guy from the west coast who aced the tech test." Forgive my bragging....if it helps, my personal life is a four alarm fire, so it all evens out.
