In my case NS expands some files indefinitely when using it offline, so the cure is to delete those files after some number of sessions. Once that is done everything previously read is totally unavailable without going on-line and reaccessing the news server. By then the phone may be in use by others. Some newbies catch on quickly, even when using google, and the problem goes away.
