IMHO, publishing your code makes it _more_ likely that it will be stolen in practice. If possible, I'd recommend limiting access to the code. Publishing open-source software that is useful could be good as long as you leverage it to get publicity and continue to develop it so that people will come back to you rather that going to whoever has developed it further.
