XML is not a FUNDAMENTAL data storage scheme in any sense of the word. It is just currently the POPULAR data storage scheme. I would not be surprised if someone showed that more data is still stored in Flat files than is stored in XML. Much more code is likely still in COBOL or C than is currently in JAVA or .NET FORTRAN, outside of universities is likely in numerically related industrial applications, like FEA or computational fluid dynamics. (think of designing skyscrapers and jet planes.) Your question shows your thinking isn't quite right. It is not what industries are these languages used for, rather it is what APPLICATIONS are the languages used for. But it seems you do understand that some languages are better suited to certain tasks than others. That's a point in your favor for growing into a good software engineer. .
