I was happily using the second edition.  Later on I purposely bought the 
third edition (W3.1), when it was already obsolete.  I thought "this huge 
pile of Microsoft crap can only get bigger, uglier, and more convoluted as 
time goes on."  It seemed like a decent place to establish a base line.  Is 
it still in one measly volume of 1,000 pages or so?
