I don't consider them "great authors" necessarily. Maybe these pairs
are to theater what XP coders are to programming. ?? (i.e., as Philip
said, not there to write great plays/code but to get plays/code written
quickly and out the door.)

Will my statement start some "you don't know great authors" flame? I
hope not. I do have extensive experience in literature, and would just
say that the pairs you propose may write plays that are simple, quick,
and/or funny to one level of audience. However, to make art, IMO, it
has to reach many audience levels across many generations and
societies.
