The trick is to get yourself into a situation where you mostly do 
software, but also have some sysadmin, database, or tech support 
responsibilities. It's more difficult to be exported when they need to 
see your smiling face when things go boom late at night or on weekends. 
It also helps if your user community requires a good deal of one-on-one 
support and training. Sitting in a cubicle writing code all day is the 
kiss of death, for both job longevity and professional development.
