Subj : Booting from Partitioned Hard Drive

Is it possible to partition a hard drive and then boot up from an
alternate partition of the harddrive with the os installed to it?

My thought was: since my computer commonly blue screens or otherwise
comes to a halt I could have the hard drive partitioned and have it
defragmented in advance using otherwise idle resources of the computer
on the alternate partition.

Any useful input appreciated,
