The XP teams I have seen type very little, and talk quietly amongst themselves. They don't flail or mutter, like solo programmers debugging do. And this is for <7 hours a day. Did you imagine pairing for heroic 14 hour shifts? Like I said, all the practices need balance from other practices. And if Matt left a well-run XP project, there would be almost no disturbance, because he could not "own" any code, hence everyone else will already understand it.
