Sounds to me like those people are confusing non-profit and not for profit companies with hobbies. Most of these companies are run like any other company - they make money and watch the bottom line, meet deadlines, pay salaries (in many cases) etc. They just don't don't end up with extra money to distribute to shareholders. I don't know why anyone would think working for such a company in a paid position wouldn't count as experience? In fact, given the tight budgets such companies often work under, it's probably better business experience than you'd get working in a large profit-oriented company. -Wm .
