Subj : InstallShield issue (maybe) To : borland.public.cpp.borlandcpp From : AncientAngler Date : Tue Oct 19 2004 12:48 pm Sorry for posting this here, but this group was my best guess. I figured the question would be seen by people who may have use InstallShield. Here goes: Trying to update the bios on my Sony notebook. Downloaded the .exe file (several times) from the Sony site. It's really a self-extracting zip file containing two cab files, an ini file, etc. The goal of the program is to create a floppy containing what's needed to update the bios. When I run the exe, InstallShield is initially involved. It quickly reaches a point where there's a message saying: "The update is confirming the system model and software driver version. Please wait." Then, the party ends. I get a small dialog box with the error message: "OpenFile 1 Failed" Platform: XP Pro, logged in as admin, have permissions for ALL folders. I've tried running the thing in safe mode (diagnostic...whatever it's called), to no avail. I've tried various compatibility modes (Win98, 95, etc). Nothing. I've checked the web site multiple times to be absolutely sure I've got the right file. Finally, I called Sony and wasted 19.95. Let's just say there was a language barrier, a hideous phone connection and a difference of opinion. The guy's last resort solution was to do a system restore to a previous state. He couldn't explain why, although he said I would probably lose the last batch of installed software. This is a business computer that makes money, so I politely demurred. A google search suggests (to me, a non-programmer) that the error message is somewhat generic. Anyone have a clue what's going on here? .
