I need some documentation on how to open the serial com port on a pc /
notebook to receive a data string.

I should establish communication between a Notebook and an external device.
This device will be sending a data string wich must be displayed on the
notebook  and then stored in a file for further processing. All this should
be done in a DOS environment.

I'm using Borland C++ version 4.5

Any related information / documentation or similar programs will be
appreciated.
