Order a IR detector, SCR, a few 10K resistors, a voltage regulator and an LED. Use the detector to trigger the SCR and the SCR to light the LED. The resistors will be for current limiting and to use as a pull-up for the LED. Use a voltage regulator to supply power to the detector (requirements vary). Then all you have to do is place the circuit in the communication path and watch the LED for activity. Simple right? With regard to your RS-232 question, you really need to provide more information. If it's a DOS program then all you need to know is the physical address you need to read and write to. If it's Windows 9x or higher then you need information about the driver provided by M$.
