Subj : Converting Colour Bitmap to Grey Scale

Hi,

I would like to load in a colour bitmap (Borland C++ Builder) and then
convert it to grey scale, using a set range of greytones defined by myself.

I have no idea on how to load in the image and perform this type of
processing. Can anyone point me in the right direction to do this and advise
me.
