Subj : a motherlode of ms-dos files! To : alt.bbs.ads From : "Tom Miller" Date : Sat Dec 13 2003 11:04 am A Motherlode of ms-dos files Drop in and sit a while! The Chatnfiles bbs ( www.chatnfiles.com ) is mainly known for having Chat and having Files. I offer a large (160,000+) and old files download collection. My oldest files date back to around or before 1988. I have both Carousel2 collection (1988) and the ms-dos portion of the Simtel ftpsite (on cd-rom) from about 1994. The Carousel2 includes about 17,000 files. The target operating systems include: ms-dos, windows 2.11/3.x, Mackintosh (system 6?), OS/2, Atari 400/800, Comodore 64/128(?) and the Amiga. It also has about 5 different sub- directories with graphical files including both Gif and non-Gif formats. The Simtel collection offers up about 10,000 ms-dos programs and files from on or before 1994. On a mailing list, it (and/or the Carousel2) were referred to as "the motherlode".. I have a shareware collection called "Bobs Hall of Fame" that actually has Files for the Ibm System 3/A400 on it as well as more typical Ms-dos files. I have a number of the Pier Shareware collections, Night Owl collections, Shareware Vault plus a number of singletons like Project Guttenberg, Nasa Space and Astronomy, Alan Appleton's BBS cd-rom, Best Windows games, Hot this that or the other. You can use Google to search the local file area. Or you can simply browse the directories. The downside is there are no easy to use tools in the www server world to allow me to easily provide keyword access to the file collection. I am in the process of writing a script that will attempt to produce a "files.htm" page that includes file descriptions for each sub-directory that Google will read and produce a less garbled index of. The website is running on a cpu/bandwidth throttle so it will not interfere with the other websites when lots of people are downloading. So it doesn't matter if 200 downloaders showup at once. They will get good service and so will the other sites. The Chat system is running a perl script called Eileen, v2.1 which is derived from a popular chat script called Everychat. It has multiple rooms and provides about 30 actions or "emoticons." The rest of the site is your basic personal website. I am looking at upgrading to a product called AspPortal but the files download indexing issue would remain.
