A "no" answer would have been fine if >there was a lack of intrest. There is most definitely such a thing as over-zealous promotion. If you mention your network in 90% of the posts that you make (which you seemed to do on DoveNet), people will get pissed, especially since this random XpresitNet mentionings were added to messages and threads which had absolutely nothing at all to do with message networks. >You can come on Xpresit and talk about DoorMud >all you want and no one's gonna bitch about it. If I mentioned DoorMUD in every post I made about any topic, you'd better believe people would get pissed off, and for good reason. >Yep. My idea for a gated base should have been met with a "no thanks, not >interested" ... Well, by my recollection (which seems to agree with Tracker1's), it went something like this. It *WAS* met with a "no thanks, not interested" the first time you posted it, a polite decline posted by multiple sysops, including the moderator/hub of DoveNet. Then it was met with something along the lines of "um, still not interested" the second time you posted it. By the third, fourth, and fifth times you suggested it, people were just sick of hearing it and flamed you. > instead it was immideately met with the general responce of: >"F--- you, your mother, your father, your family, and your idea!" Your re-interpretation / selective memory of that thread is very interesting. First off, it was NOT *immediately* met with an offensive general response. This didn't happen until after you plugged your idea repeatedly for several days. Secondly, your posts in that thread included more profanity than anyone else's, by a long shot, and is the reason you were banned from the network. >DoveNet is frowned upon in alot of other networks because of the flamable >atmosphere in that network. That's partially on account of DoveNet being 99% unmoderated. Even so, DoveNet has a lot less flame wars than FidoNet, for whatever that's worth :P >It is also a general "bitch" that people have, that Synchronet has DoveNet >preinstalled. I mean, when you install the damn software, it should *ask* >you if you want DoveNet, and explain what it is. Not have it auto-rammed >down peoples throats. It isn't "auto-rammed". Although pre-configured, it is NOT completed pre-installed. You must make a special QWK account on Vertrauen BBS and then manually modify a Synchronet batch file to *enable* DoveNet. So clearly, you won't end up with DoveNet *unless you purposely go out of your way to enable it*. >I am pretty sure BRE and LORD at least *used* to charge for updates. If they >don't anymore, then I am definately glad to hear it. I remeber people >bitching about it in 1995 or so. Selective memory, again. LORD has *never, ever* charged for updates. If you registered the first release of LORD, your registration code will still work in the current version. Ask any longtime sysop who has been running the game for that long :) As for BRE, I do not ever recollect an upgrade charge going into effect, nor do I ever recall people bitching about it in 1995. It's possible that John Dailey changed the key system when he purchased the door from its original author, and possibly he charged a single upgrade fee, but I don't believe that was the case. See, you wonder why I make statements to you like "you don't know what you're talking about"... well, there you go, it's because you continue to make posts with blatant factual errors, like insisting that LORD had upgrade fees and Synchronet rams dove-net down peoples throats without their knowledge! .
