being less familiar with this reader I rand less over the .jdt file in the 
messagebase and extracted the message, cat(1)ing it to the terminal showed me
the symbols he thought he'd written.

actually I used   tr "\r" "\n" < UNIX.jdt | less   as less doesn't work too 
well with \r-terminated lines,
