NetBSD got sidetracked, though, in the issue of portability. As a result of /that/, FreeBSD was formed to redirect focus exclusively on the PC-architecture platform. As I understand the situation, some people were upset at the deteriorating level of support from the NetBSD group for the PC architecture (the original platform for 386/BSD), so they created a new group to focus exclusively on the 386 version.
