Subj : linux vs *BSD To : Roy From : Francois Thunus Date : Mon May 26 2003 11:43 am Hello ! I was a bit quick to erase the answer to Roy's message, but I pretty much agree with everything that's in it. I have tried free|386|net|openBSD, and pretty much all the main linux flavors. Having worked with several unices, from SVr4 to Solaris/SunOS (not mentionning AIX or HP/Unix, for me they are all pretty much the same (yes, I know, broad generalization, but you know what I mean). It is a bit like changing cars: ha yes, here the windshield defrost button is on the left, here the default shell is korn, or ls doesn't take that parameter. I ended up choosing Linux for mainly two reasons: a) compatibility of Linux partition with other partition types commonly found on desktop machines, allowing easy dual boot (this feature maiy have changed in BSD* since, and this may or not be relevant to your choice) b) marginal speed factor for arrival of new hardware driver. No longer a concern now, but at the time we were getting newer machines and the drivers were available under linux before BSD. That's about it. Not much, as you can see. *BSD systems are a very good choice. They have pretty much everything Linux has, and if they don't, you can always download the source and recompile anyway. It all comes down to a matter of personnal taste. Coming from slackware, you would have no problem to adapt to any BSD (as with any unix, some assembly is required :-)) Just my $0.02 Francois Thunus Turn your pentium pro III into a Gameboy, type WIN at the C>. 2:270/25.2@fidonet | Views expressed here | are strictly my own. | (unless otherwise stated) --- FMailX 1.48b * Origin: Xara Sto Pragma !
