Subj : unixs on a 386 To : DAVID DRUMMOND From : CHARLES ANGELICH Date : Fri Dec 07 2001 07:45 pm 123338f248d3 unix Hello David - --8<--cut CA>> The author of the how-to FAQ file seems to assume everyone CA>> has W9x so not having it would invalidate any promises he CA>> made that it would install. ZipSlack is a DOS/Win CA>> Microsoft interdependent application apparently. DD> Good point. ZIPSlack is specifically aimed at Win9x users, DD> according to the docs. I'm convinced by your only mentioning this fact recently that you only now decided to read these DOC files for yourself. If John had not posted the ones he did post I don't think you would've read yours. LOL The best possible answer to the newbie question "Can I install Linux on my 386?" seems to be something like: A: Yes you can install the DOS FAT format version of Slackware version/release/distribution #8 onto a 386 computer if you have 7.8 meg or more of memory, at least 99 meg of hard drive space, the zip-cutter utility from Simtelnet, 26 formatted diskettes, and the URL to download the 31.9 meg archive from the Internet or the Slackware version/release/distribution #8 on a CD. The zip-cutter and 26 diskettes can be replaced by a working W9x install on another machine capable of a W9x install and using Winzip for the uncompression of the 31.9 meg archive file. (16 bit unzip'rs will crash attempting this) An alternative would be to install the 386 100 meg or more hard drive into a W9x machine with a CD reader, install there, then move the hard drive back into the 386 and reconfigure the Linux install to match the 386 hard drive. The not included on the CD or in the 31.9 meg archive addition of the 8 meg swap file installer is highly recommended for those with less than 16 meg of memory in their 386's. NOTE: If you require assistance for this install we will discuss 486's and Pentiums or MINIX until you leave the echo.
