Subj : unixs on a 386 To : David Drummond From : Warren Hrach Date : Fri Dec 07 2001 01:04 am David, With all the flack you have been getting over some info you posted on Linux echo I would like to add a few words over on this echo. First of all I doubt C.A. even runs Linux just on a UNIX system at work or something. Best way to handle C.A. is to not reply, I know it is hard because it makes one look like he/she has posted bad advice. The whole thing about installing linux on an XT is a big waste of time. words and bandwith. I would have just told an inquiring XT user to continue to use it and look around for a cheap 486 or better used box. I recently bought a spare box that had a Pentium 75 running at 180 MHz with 32 meg memory and a 6 gig hd. I bought it from a local hardware guru that goes to swap meets, picks up working and non working systems and resurrects the good stuff. That is what my spare box is, it had a bad hd and powersupply and he replace with a good 6gig he had and good p/s. and I got it for $50. He even put win98 on it and when I went to install R.H. 7.1 it got the hd trashed because the cdrom I had for R.H. was a bad burn. Anyway after wiping the hd and just changeing the bios to boot from cdrom i managed to get R.H. 6.2 installed with no problems and *NO* *DOS* !!! I even upgraded to R.H.7.1 slick as a vistle. I am concerned about any newcomer to the Linux echo getting the idea that linux is just a bundle of trouble and will give up before even getting to ask for any information. The worse thing is the moderator allows this to go on and on. Warren Hrach, Moderator Linux_User echo. --- BBBS/LiI v4.01 Flag-3 * Origin: Ocean Beach CA, ob.darktech.org:8080 (1:202/745) .
