The climate is wrong for basements here.  but some houses are built on
approx 2 m piers to catch the breeze for cooling (heating is not a big
issue here) but concrete slab floor-foundations are most popular for new
houses. Still, the raised houses have storage space underneath if you don't
mind the occasional small river in heavy rains :(
