The drive shouldn't have been a problem, I know someone who was running ESDI drives with one of the pre-1 kernals. but i guess it depends on the paddle-card somewhat, I think he had a paddle-card that worked like a "regular" (ISA) hard drive controller in the way it was addressed etc. OTOH at the start he was using the drives via a cheap SCSI card and a ESDI-SCSI converter as that's how the were configured when he got them second-hand.
