And it makes the system much more sturctured. You'll get a core OS that contains everything an "old" Unix user expects from a typical Unix OS, no more and no less, within some 200 MB. All packages that you'll install later will go to /usr/local, so the optional stuff is cleanly separated from the operating system stuff. I really like this.
