Las time I cared ~ 200 MB, maybe more nowadys, but 500 MB is enough definitely and should even leave room for /var and /home. The rest of the stuff is packages, ports and source code. That's one nice thing about FreeBSD - the core system is just 200 MB and you get everything that you expect from a "standard" Unix including even basic development tools. The rest of the CD's is just software that you can install, but don't have to, like all sorts of tools and X window stuff.
