To put these things in perspective, Russell. The SENDMAIL on the FreeBSD came up outta the box. Only thing I had to do was create the /etc/local-host-names file (and add eforest.net) already referenced in the sendmail.cf I did note, even, that the anti-spam, reverse name lookups are already enabled on the sendmail -- to my dismay, though, as I had no internal name server running at the time (another small glitch yet for me to fix), so the FreeBSD was unable to properly resolve the inbound mail messages. I can't speak to the NAT... my best recommendation for something quick and simple to do NAT on a SOHO is to grab a copy of GnatBox Lite from gta.com. It runs on a modified BSD kernel, boots from a floppy, and will function quite nicely on a 486 w/16MB RAM -- my system is actually an old Dell I rescued from the junkpile -- a 486DX2/66 w/32MB RAM. The alternatives for putting a fully functioning email handler on NT are somewhat even more intimidating, I think, than the SENDMAIL - though I do run an Exchange server on this network -- I'd rather have the simplicity of the SENDMAIL, but I've gotten quite attached to the groupware in Exchange. --- * Origin: lawrence@eforest.net | The Enchanted Forest (1:106/6018) .
