Subj : WWIV/X 4.24 for LINUX/UNIX To : ALL From : MODEL500 Date : Fri Jan 05 2001 09:06 am As some of you may know, there has been an undercover porting operation of WWIV 4.24 to UNIX. A Beta has recently been released as 0.8.0 (still some bugs to work out with the bbsd daemon), and can be found at this URL: http://kobran.yi.org/wwivx The BBS can be installed as a replacement shell, which means you have to go through UNIX log-in to get to the BBS, or it can be installed as a replacement login for telnetd (or equivalent daemon), meaning that UNIX login is completely bypassed. As far as performance is concerned, I have noticed considerable improvement over the DOS/Windows environments, CPU usage is typically 20-35% less, and scales better to multiple internet users. Myself, I am using WWIV on my personal development WORKSTATION (which is running FOUR X displays for me and three of my colleagues who use the machine remotely), in addition to regularly running massive C compiles (I am a web app developer), and miscellaneous workstation stuff. In short, UNIX is just chugging right along.... for those who want to know, I am running Linux/Mandrake 7.2 with almost all my services turned off.... my machine has 128mb of ram, and 12gb of hard drive space, running on ReiserFS file-system. and according to my 'top' display has been running non-stop for two months, 6 days, 11:15 ... and my load avg is right at 2.25 right now with all three colleagues using my box, and wwiv running.... oh, doors are easy to set up too :-) any standard unix console app can run unmodified (I've tried everything from nethack, to emacs, to vi, to my zork interpreter.. all work beautifully) --- WWIVGate 2.00c * Origin: * Eagle's Dare * Laurel, MD * 301-498-1984 (1:109/500) .
