If you are trying to look at the content of a cd by looking at the driver without mounting it first, I am not surprized it does not work. step one is to mount the cd onto the system. Usually, this is a root priviledge, unless the device was declared for users use in /etc/fstab. There are alos now automounting syste that will automagically mount the cd and the floppy when a new one is inserted, and umount it when it is taken out. But as far as I know (I don't use those), they still function via a mountpoint defined in fstab.
