   I call the program and it returns immediately with an error response
   (error 200).  Does not even get to the usual opening screen.
   (program is InterMail IM version 2.29i).

  From what you, Jerry and Ross have told me in other messages --- that
  is the fundamental problem.   I was *not* using a FOSSIL.   I was
  giving IM the comm port and interrupt info in the configuration file
  like I had done in OS/2.   I'm off to look at some of the specific
  suggestions as to what to use there.
