I don't think we are in any danger of seeing Joe McCarthy the sequel. 
If I am wronged by someone in a position of power, I have adequate
recourse to defend myself.

My answer to your fear of someone extorting you by using something
ambarrassing...   don't do anything to be embarrassed about.

If you already have, let them reveal it rather than allow yourself to
be blackmailed.  If you run for Governor, your deep dark secrets are
sure to be exposed. :)
