I think of an ISP as offering me access to their hardware for X
amount of dollars. I've never used an ISP's homepage, I use
Google.com as my homepage. 

As for the proprietary software - if a person is using Windows
(any version) you've already installed the bulk of their
proprietary software minus a few updates they may or may not
try to push on you. :-)
